Quality Level A + B Subsurface Utility Engineering provided by AEI

Subsurface Utility Engineering is not confined to highways. It can be used on airport, railroad, transit, building construction, military, sanitation, nuclear, and any other public works project where underground utilities may be encountered. It can also be used for environmental purposes, such as detecting and mapping underground storage tanks, septic fields, and even contaminants. SUE adds value, quality, and accountability to any project.

QLA Subsurface Utility EngineeringQuality Level A. QL-A, is the highest level of accuracy presently available. It provides information for the precise plan and profile mapping of underground utilities through the nondestructive exposure of underground utilities, and also provides the type, size, condition, material and other characteristics of underground features.

AEI's state-of-the-art air vacuum excavating is a key component to our subsurface investigation exploration. By using air for our digging tool, we’ve eliminated the destructive factor of excavating around utilities and other buried structures.

  • Air vacuum excavating provides subsurface utility engineering S.U.E Quality Level A data by determining the precise vertical, horizontal, size and type of the utility for accurate planning of the construction project.
  • This technology can provide engineers with accurate utility designation for proper information for PS&E’s (plans, specifications & cost estimates)

Quality Level B  QL-B involves the application of appropriate surface geophysical methods to determine the existence and horizontal position of virtually all utilities within the project limits. This activity is called "designating". The information obtained in this manner is surveyed to project control. It addresses problems caused by inaccurate utility records, abandoned or unrecorded facilities, and lost references.

QLB Subsurface Utility EngineeringWhile the collection and use of S.U.E. (Subsurface Utility Engineering) data is critical to the design element of any project, it may be only the first step in a long range strategy for utility owners and public agencies. We will provide engineers the S.U.E. data and ensure its transfer to design engineers for the development of more accurate PS&E's.
